FOR PETE'S SAKE TAKE A BREAK FROM CANCER
2015 WALT DISNEY WORLD MARATHON FUNDRAISER
When I was in middle school, my father was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer, and my family was treated to a completely free vacation to Orlando, FL, through the non-profit organization For Pete's Sake Take a Break from Cancer. It was an incredible trip! My family basically got to escape reality for a week; there was no more sickness, pain, or fear - only fun, love, and excitement. This vacation really bonded us as a family and allowed us to create memories we would have never been able to create on our own. I am forever thankful to For Pete's Sake for allowing me to have a final vacation with my father before he passed away, and I wanted to help give back to For Pete's Sake.
In 2015, I registered to participate in the Walt Disney World Marathon. This was my first full marathon, and it was a blast! I trained for this race for the entire year! Previously, I had participated in the Walt Disney World Half Marathon events in 2013 and 2014. In 2014, I turned my half marathon race into a fundraiser for For Pete's Sake Take a Break from Cancer. I decided to continue with the fundraiser in 2015 in my running of the full marathon.
According to their website, "For Pete's Sake Cancer Respite Foundation (formerly Crossing the Finish Line) is a non-profit organization that assists adult cancer patients, their caregivers and loved ones. Inspired by the late Peter R. Bossow, Jr., we give these patients a break from cancer in a secure and comfortable environment. Eligible patients, along with their caregivers, receive a one-week expense-paid respite vacation to select locations along the East Coast and in the Caribbean. For Pete’s Sake owns two respite homes near Orlando, Florida and relies on donated vacation homes to supplement additional stays....The lasting memories from their respites help our patients recognize that it is their priceless lives, not cancer, that defines them. We aim to strengthen the hearts, minds, and souls of these courageous individuals as they battle the psychological, emotional, economic, and spiritual trauma that accompanies a cancer diagnosis." You can learn more about For Pete's Sake at their website.
